Russia sends naval ship to defend ally Syria in case of attack

The Russian state news agency, Interfax, has reported that naval landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov to Syrian waters in preparation of a possible military attack from the United States.

“The Nikolai Filchenkov under the command of Captain 2nd Rank Igor Dmitriyenko is immediately going on a distant mission today. The ship will go to Novorossiysk, where it will take special cargo on board and will head to its appointed combat service area in the Eastern Mediterranean,” Interfax quoted an unnamed navy source as saying.

Two additional naval ships the Nastoichivy destroyer of the Russian Baltic Fleet and the Smetlivy escort ship of the Black Sea Fleet, both of which are armed with anti-ship and anti-air craft missile systems, are scheduled to join the Nikolai Filchenkov ship in the Mediterranean within the next few days.

Although Russia has said it will not get militarily involved in Syria, the Nikolai Filchenkov vessel’s arrival to the eastern Mediterranean was not scheduled as part of a planned rotation. Interfax did not give any more details about the vessel and Russia’s Defense Ministry declined immediate comment neither confirming or refuting the possibility of Russia attacking US ships should a strike on Syria occur.
