Congrats you won, here’s your Kalashnikov

According to, Al-Qaeda has been awarding machine guns and automatic rifles to winners of a religious competition held during the holy month of Ramadan.

The contest was publicised in Yemen’s southern provinces of Ibb, Ad-Dali and al-Bayda and prizes included Russian-made Kalashnikov rifles, Chinese machine guns, Austrian Glock pistols, as well as motorcycles and other gifts.

The religious competition is considered to be the first public activity organised in Yemen by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) since government troops forced its fighters to withdraw from the neighbouring regions of Abyan and Shabwah in the summer of last year.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula or AQAP has been trying to raise its profile with religious and social activities since Yemeni troops forced its fighters to withdraw from the Abyan and Shabwa regions last summer. The religious competition is a first attempt at ‘Islamic militant community relations’ and was reportedly relatively successful with large numbers of Yemeni citizens participating in the competition.

Tribal in nature, Yemeni’s take great pride in owning weapons in general. Perhaps they are taking a que from their friends at the NRA.
