Daily Beast reports US put Egypt aid on hold- Including non-delivery of Apache Helicopters

In an exclusive today, The Daily Beast has reported that the Obama administration has already “quietly” put aid to Egypt on hold according to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the head of the Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee.  The temporary suspension accounts for approximately $585 million of the $1.3 billion worth of military equipment, Apache helicopters (which the Egyptian government has already paid for), as well as military funding and some direct economic aid. In a statement to The Daily Beast on Monday a spokesman for Leahy, David Carle said “[Senator Leahy’s] understanding is that aid to the Egyptian military has been halted, as required by law.”

Under US foreign policy, all aid to countries who experience a coup d’etat must be immediately cut off.  Following the popular military backed ousting of President Morsi from office, the Obama administration has been very careful not to label the event as a coup despite several senators, including Senator McCain blatantly stating that it was a coup.

While the aid has been halted, the Obama administration will not be publicly announcing its long term strategy or position on Egypt any time soon particularly in the aftermath of the Egyptian Army’s forceful dispersal of pro-Morsi protestors that left 638 people dead and over 3000 injured in one day.  In a televised speech on Saturday August 15th, Obama stated that while the US wanted to “sustain our relationship with Egypt, our traditional cooperation cannot continue as usual when civilians are being killed in the streets and rights are being rolled back.” He went on to condemned the violence in Egypt and stated that his administration would need to “assess the implications of the actions taken by the interim government and further steps that we may take as necessary with respect to the U.S.-Egyptian relationship.”

In a statement to The Daily Beast, one administration official stated:

“The decision was we’re going to avoid saying it was a coup, but to stay on the safe side of the law, we are going to act as if the designation has been made for now. By not announcing the decision, it gives the administration the flexibility to reverse it.”
